Event Photography | Caroline’s First Holy Communion

When Caroline's Mom started talking to me about wanting me to photograph her daughter's first communion, I was so excited! These are the kind of special moments I love documenting for families.  I also get excited when I know I can solve a problem for Mom - every parent knows that feeling of being torn between wanting to play the role of family-documenter and wanting to sit and really savor the moment you're experiencing. By hiring me to photograph Caroline, her Mom and Dad were able to sit with their congregation and truly enjoy the event with their family and church family. And it was a joy to experience it with them!  There were so many sweet moments and I could just feel Caroline's excitement and pride in this momentous occasion. Plus, what little lady doesn't love to get dolled up and celebrate with a fancy dress? ;-) Congrats Caroline! And thank you to the Welch family for including me in this celebration. It was

Families at Home | Little Miss Rachelle and the Wagoners

This family has grown nearer and dearer to my heart through tragedy. Tragedy has a bittersweet way of doing that, I think.  Because it is always precious and special to come into someone's home and photograph their newest blessing. But with the Wagoners, it also carried a note of that sacred celebration of life and acknowledgement loss; of sadness mixed with joy.     Because as this family basks in the sweetness of their new fourth baby, they also carry the pain of the death of their third baby.  When I photographed Judah just the day after his birth, I had no idea how meaningful those images would become when he suddenly passed away four months later. And I have been humbled and honored to know Lindsey and see her walk through the grieving process with utter transparency.  We corresponded frequently over the next year and were both struck by how close our experiences of grief were. Though we had lost very different things, we could each

Cake Smash Shoot | Miss Harper

I had another opportunity to spend some time with the amazing Christofaro family. This time we set up in the comfort of their home to celebrate Little Miss Harper's first birthday!     First of all, I really loved Melissa's choice of The Very Hungry Caterpillar as a theme. Besides the fact that I loved reading that book to my own little ladies, Eric Carle just slam-dunks the bright-colored cuteness!     And just look at the lace details of this dress she found! I die!     As I was setting up my background and we finished blowing up the balloons, Harper needed a quick nourishing nibble before indulging her sweet tooth and I took the opportunity to capture the sweetness of those moments, too.     So first the balloons...     And then, CAKE.     And oh my, did she dig in!     It was funny, the more

In Home Family Session | Cozy Details

I am finishing up editing one of my favorite sessions to date. It was a recent in-home, multi-generational shoot that was full of just the sweetest moments.  Grandma and Great-Grandpa were there to snuggle and play and share sweet baby kisses. We hung out in the toy room where the girls spend their days playing with their Grandma while Mom and Dad are at work. They snuggled on the couch together and showed me their favorite dolls and awesome microscope!     Big Sis got into her dance outfit for me and showed me her music box. They read stories together and jumped on Mom and Dad's bed. There were tickle-fights and giggles galore.     Photoshoots like this are hands-down my favorite because I can just see how much more relaxing it is for families. Especially those with real little ones. Everyone is more comfortable in their natural habitat, adults AND kiddos! We were able to take breaks for goldfish snacks and breastfeeding and

Family Photos | The Christofaros

This family photo session is near and dear to my heart because I know how patiently Melissa waited for it to finally happen! You guys, I've never had the experience of having to reschedule a shoot not once, not twice, but THREE TIMES due to rain! It was insane. Poor Melissa scheduled with me all the way back in June for a nice summery photo session and we didn't end up meeting until the end of August... on a particular chilly day, too! So she deserves a million gold-stars for being such a flexible and so easy-going client despite the hassle. It was so great having someone so excited about photos with me. And I'm so pleased to present her with this blog sneak peek of the results... her little ones just shine. I had so much fun chasing them around during the session and so much fun editing the photos afterwards. If these darlings don't make you smile, I don't know what will! Thanks again for your patience, Melissa & Brian! I think you'll agree it was worth the

Three Ways I Make Senior Sessions More Interesting

Senior year is so important. And those photos are a big deal, too. You really need to commemorate your senior's accomplishments and you also want to freeze this moment in time for yourself... that moment where they're standing at the edge of adulthood and they're about to fly! And I really work hard to make senior sessions interesting. Here's how...     1. Variety. Look, I know you're just as sick as I am of looking at the same old boring poses of seniors. I will work up a sweat if that's what it takes to get authentic photos of your kid. Also they're really gonna need a killer headshot going forward and I've definitely got that covered. We look for interesting spots and we try interesting poses and I shake things up as much as I can.     2. Unconventional Props. I don't have a dog (or a cat or a mouse or a parrot or whatever) but I know your senior loves the family pet. And I know they're looking down the barrel of their last year at

Couples | Alex & Stacey Engagement Session

When your brother gets engaged to one of your best friends, what's the first thing you start scheming?     An engagement photography session, of course!  No? Just me? ;-)     Well fine maybe that's just a photographer-problem... I don't mind! Being able to photograph the people you love is so great because it takes a lot of the guesswork out of the session. I've got some pretty solid Sherlock Holmes skills and I usually do a thorough interrogation of my clients before a session to make sure we're really capturing "them" and taking photos that reflect who they are. But that's pretty easy when you've known one of the clients their whole life.     It was so great to be able to photograph some of the things that make Alex & Stacey the couple they are... quiet moments on the front porch, giggles and snuggles and bike rides...     They brought me up to a beautiful

Fine Art Prints | Summer = Sunflowers

When I lived in Germany, I was exposed to a few new (to me) varieties of crops.     For example, I will never think of Spring in Germany without thinking of these yellow fields of rapeseed flowers. I will also never think of a bottle of canola the same ever again... I can't image how many of these tiny flowers need to get pressed to get a bottle of that popular cooking oil! Anyways, those fields are just my favorite, but that's not what today's post is about, I'm just being easily distracted.     Sunflowers.  About this time every summer, most villages would have at least some sunflowers blooming in some local farmer's field. There would be these "Blumen" spots you could stop and cut your own flowers! And besides sunflowers, there would be lovely gladiolas and dahlias. I was obsessed with the sunflowers.       And one summer I discovered a field that must have been for sunflower seeds and/or
